For those thinking of setting up a consulting business, or refreshing an existing consulting business, here are some tips to create a solid foundation for long term success:
- It’s wise to plan and set up the business after hours whilst you are still working and before resigning from your current position. Otherwise, cashflow may become a significant issue. For example, if you are considering setting up a consulting business at the start of 2025, then begin the process now.
- Start with some feasibility research by considering what services you could offer based on your skills, experiences and interests. Then contact potential clients to confirm if there would be enough demand for your services.
- Be careful not to use your current and/or past employer’s intellectual property. You must create assets and deliverables from scratch, or source ready-made templates like ours, which save you lots of time and ensures you don’t breach copyright. Plus this way you may easily incorporate your own personal branding.
- Understand how to put a realistic value on your time and how to cost out a project so you will make a profit
